SUNNYBANK GATHERING 2017-09-07T14:07:38+00:00

The Gathering is the best known of the Foundation-sponsored events. This annual event began in 1997 as a small get-together for Foundation business, and has grown to become a highly anticipated summer ritual. The Gathering is held annually on the third weekend in August at the “mecca” of Colliedom, Sunnybank, in Wayne, New Jersey. Sunnybank was the home of Albert Payson Terhune, renowned dog writer, Collie breeder, and owner, and served as the setting for many of his famous dog stories. Although Sunnybank House was demolished in 1969, over nine acres of the property remain for the public to enjoy. Here you can see Lad’s grave, and further up the hill, the graves of Bruce, “The Dog Without A Fault,” and Jean. Continue along to the graves of the other Collie greats like Wolf, Fair Ellen, Treve, and Gray Dawn at Champion Rock, stop by the old puppy run, and relax as the Master and Mistress did in years gone by at the Lily Pool or the Evening Lookout and feel the magic of Sunnybank.

Saturday morning begins with tours of Sunnybank led by experts from the Terhune Sunnybank Memorial, and continues with talks on Terhune, Sunnybank, and of course, the Sunnybank Collies. Past speakers have included the woman responsible for saving Sunnybank, Claire Leishman, the late Irving Litvag, author of The Master of Sunnybank, Bill Mastbrook and the late Dale Hooper, longtime friends of Anice Terhune, and Kristina T. Marshall, author of His Dogs and Forever Friends. In the afternoon, the focus switches to Collies.

Programs over the years have covered a wide variety of events ranging from agility demonstrations to first aid clinics to lectures on puppy selection to the heartwarming Rescue Parade. Sunday brings a series of puppy matches that include the Virtues Match and the Lad Memorial Match. Both days also feature live and silent auctions. The weekend combines a truly wonderful mix of fun, education, and fund-raising, with Collie people attending from all over the country, and some past visitors even joining us from as far away as Wales, Australia and Japan. There is no better place in the world to hold a Collie get together than the home of the greatest Collie fan of all time! The Gathering is always held in August – please see our Events Calendar for more information! Come join us, and hear the joyous trumpeting barks of Collies fill the air over Sunnybank once again.

Collie Health Foundation Name

On December 17, 2002 the organization changed it’s name from the Collie Club of America Foundation to the Collie Health Foundation in order to give the Foundation a unique identity separate from the Collie Club of America and more clearly represent our mission.
